Sheffield Watch Co. is a historic American heritage brand resurrected by global product development veteran Jay Turkbas. Originally established in the mid-20th century as a purveyor of affordable, no-nonsense mechanical tool watches (most famously their 1960s skin divers), the brand ultimately faded during the quartz crisis of the 1970s. Decades later, driven by a childhood nostalgia for his very first dive watch—a vintage Sheffield Allsport—Turkbas re-acquired and revived the moniker. Today, Sheffield operates as a cult-favorite microbrand dedicated to delivering that exact mid-century retro charm backed by transparent, modern engineering.
Sheffield’s identity is built squarely around historical mid-century skin divers and automotive heritage, favouring utility over unneeded luxury. Their core aesthetic relies on clean, vintage-inspired layout geometry, utilising bead-blasted or polished 316L stainless steel cases, highly secure drilled lugs, and sapphire crystals with anti-glare coatings. They place a high premium on legibility, deploying classic “shark-tooth” or bold block hour indices, distinctively shaped handset geometry (like oversized triangle and sword hands), and applications of high-performance Swiss Super-LumiNova. Championing absolute manufacturing transparency, Sheffield openly details.
TWJ Favourite Watch
There are some really quality affordable watches in Sheffield’s range, the recently released Deep Grey 300m diver being one example. I have a pink GT solar in my collection that is a solid and fun watch but the one watch I’ve always come back to is the 1A 38 Black and Blue. a 38mm dive watch that looks great and is super affordable at just under £180.
