Diatom Watches is an independent, design-focused British microbrand founded by aerospace engineers and materials scientists Dr. Chris Rose and Dr. Alex Baker. Operating out of the United Kingdom, the brand takes its name from diatoms—microscopic, single-celled algae whose stratospheric discovery during high-altitude atmospheric research inspired Diatom’s founding mission. Rejecting generic catalog parts and lazy vintage reissues, Diatom operates as a small-batch, design-first studio centered on geometric purity, rare materials, and genuine space-flown provenance.

What truly sets Diatom apart is its literal connection to space exploration. Every timepiece undergoes a high-altitude “Launch Protocol,” ascending to over 120,000 feet into near-space aboard a dedicated launch platform—subjecting the watches to extreme pressures and sub-zero vacuums before returning to Earth with flight-certified digital video proof. Alongside stratospheric testing, Diatom builds with authenticated extraterrestrial materials, utilizing 4.5-billion-year-old Gibeon meteorite dials and verified fragments from the Apollo 11 Command Module heat shield.

Diatom’s visual signature is defined by original case architecture, sharp geometric facets, and multi-layered dial construction. The brand is distinguished by its custom, angular case designs featuring a blend of fine vertical brushing, blasted recesses, and high-polished bevels that catch light at every angle.
