Review: The Namica Okami Kanji – From top of the wishlist to the wrist, has it been worth the wait?

The deeper you get into the watch hobby, the more brands you discover, and the longer your wishlist grows. While that list chops and changes over time, a select few pieces manage to stay firmly at the top. These are the “affordable grails”—the most-wanted pieces you are desperate to pull the trigger on, but can’t right away, whether you’re saving up, clearing space in the box, or simply waiting for a restock.
The Okami by Namica has occupied that top spot for me for a long time. The purple dial, the Kanji markers, and the titanium TV-style case meant this watch was right up my street. You can imagine my delight when a re-release was announced; finally, I was going to add it to my collection.
So, has it met expectations? Has it been worth the wait? Having lived with the watch for about a month now, I can safely say it has. Albeit with a few minor niggles, the Namica Okami is a stellar timepiece. Just as it firmly held its ground on my wishlist, it will be keeping its spot in my watch box for a very long time to come.

- Shift to a Solid Caseback: The newer version swapped the original see-through exhibition window for a solid titanium caseback; while the etched wolf design is nice, having the choice between the two would have been preferred.
- No Bundled Extra Strap: For a watch costing over £450 (plus substantial import fees), the integrated rubber strap is not included in the box, and sourcing it separately feels a bit steep at an additional £60.
- Premium Total Cost of Entry: While the watch itself is reasonably priced, when you factor in the additional cost for the optional strap and the heavy £115 import taxes/fees, the total investment adds up quickly for a microbrand piece.

the watch pairs its futuristic looks with impressive real-world durability and comfort, thanks to a Grade 2 titanium case with a scratch-resistant coating and an on-the-fly micro-adjustment bracelet. It easily survived daily commutes, extreme heat, and a chaotic weekend with small children entirely unscathed. The only minor grievances preventing a perfect score are personal preferences regarding the newer solid caseback instead of an exhibition window, and the missed opportunity to bundle in the integrated rubber strap, which felt steep as a separate £60 purchase. Ultimately, these are tiny critiques for an exceptional, high-quality timepiece that punches well above its weight and has earned a permanent spot in the collection.

Design
The Okami Kanji is designed by the Japanese brand Namica, and right out of the box, its inspirations are obvious. It oozes a distinct cyberpunk vibe, featuring a stunning fumé gradient dial that transitions seamlessly from vibrant purple to deep blue, before framing itself against a sharp, black inner chapter ring. The look is anchored by silver hands and beautifully accented by a small pink arrow at 12 o’clock and a cyan-tipped seconds hand. Visually, it’s a triumph that perfectly captures Namica’s signature futuristic aesthetic.
Those silver hands point to a set of unique indices that alternate between standard baton markers and Japanese Kanji symbols. For instance, the 6 o’clock position features 六 (Roku). It’s a fantastic visual nod to the brand’s roots that keeps the dial incredibly engaging; to my eye, it stands out far more than the standard baton-only layout of the original release.
This leads nicely into my first minor niggle: the caseback. For this newer version, Namica switched from an exhibition window to a solid, patterned titanium caseback featuring the Kanji symbol for Okami (Wolf) in the centre. While it’s a clean design, I personally preferred the original see-through look and wish we had been given the option to choose between the two.
Performance
Namica didn’t cut corners when it comes to performance. The Okami is powered by the premium Miyota 9039 automatic movement. This is a high-beat, ultra-thin caliber running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, which gives the seconds hand a beautifully smooth sweep around the dial. Over the last month of daily wear, it has kept time brilliantly, proving to be an absolute workhorse.
The 9039 is a native no-date movement. There is no annoying “phantom” crown position when you pull it out to set the time, and omitting the date window keeps the futuristic dial completely symmetrical and uncluttered. It allows the stunning purple gradient and unique Kanji markers to take absolute center stage.
In terms of daily wearability, legibility is excellent. Despite the complex dial layout and deep fumé colors, the silver hands catch the light beautifully and contrast sharply against the background, making it effortless to read at a glance. When the sun goes down, the cyberpunk vibe truly comes alive. The Swiss Super-LumiNova is potent and snaps to attention immediately, glowing brightly and ensuring the entire face remains perfectly legible deep into the night.
On The Wrist
The case itself is crafted from Grade 2 titanium, treated with Namica’s “A.T. Shield” scratch-resistant coating. While I have no intention of intentionally stress-testing it, the watch has already survived a trip to Silverstone, endured a weekend with two small children, and tackled the daily commute entirely unscathed.
It comes paired with a matching titanium bracelet featuring an on-the-fly micro-adjustment clasp, which is incredibly solid and comfortable. My trip to Silverstone happened to land on one of the hottest days of the year, and the watch remained effortless to wear all day long.
This brings me to my second minor complaint, which comes down to personal preference. Namica offers a version of this watch on an integrated rubber strap, and I can’t help but feel the head might look even better on it. I reached out to Namica to see if the rubber straps were available separately; they kindly sourced one and sent over a private purchase link. However, at roughly £60—on top of a watch costing just over £450 plus an additional £115 in import fees and taxes—it felt a bit steep. Given how many microbrands include an extra strap in the box nowadays, I wish Namica had bundled it in.
