Review Score ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4½ out of 5)

Golby was one of the first names I stumbled upon when diving into the world of British microbrands. They are regularly praised for their distinct designs, impressive build quality, and killer price points—rightly earning a reputation as one of the best microbrands the UK has to offer.

That being said, I never actually intended to buy this watch. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted a Golby, but the 36mm case size of the Coastal felt just a bit too small on paper. I’ve owned 36mm pieces before, and they always felt slightly lost on my wrist.

However, getting the chance to handle the Coastal in person at the WatchIt! Watch Fair changed everything. Being able to try it on and see how it actually wears completely flipped my perspective—and it’s safe to say it’s now a permanent, thoroughly enjoyed fixture in my collection.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The Vibrant Colourway: The bold pink accents make the dial absolutely pop, creating a striking, standout look that demands attention in the best way possible.
  • Out-of-the-Box Versatility: Having both a high-quality steel bracelet and a comfortable rubber strap included gives you two entirely distinct styles right from day one.
  • The 26/26 Story: Being the very last piece of this strictly limited run gives the watch an incredibly cool backstory and a highly sentimental spot in my collection.

Cons

  • The Size Limitation: While the 36mm case wears surprisingly well on my wrist, the design is so good that it leaves you wishing a 39mm or 40mm version existed for broader appeal.
  • Strict Availability: Because this specific anniversary edition is completely sold out, tracking one down on the secondary market is going to be a real challenge for interested buyers.
  • Butterfly Clasp: Without micro-adjustment, it might mean some have issues getting the perfect fit.

Summary

The Golby Coastal Anniversary Edition is an absolute head-turner, thanks in large part to its vibrant pink bezel accent and a truly stunning application of BGW9 lume. On the wrist, the oil-pressed wave pattern dial beautifully catches the light, shifting character depending on your surroundings.

Golby has nailed the versatility here; the watch wears incredibly comfortably and packs two distinct personalities right out of the box, thanks to the included 5-link steel bracelet and the flexible rubber strap.

As a special anniversary release, this exact pink variant will be tough to track down now that it’s sold out. However, if you want to experience the Coastal’s fantastic case proportions for yourself, the equally striking Orange, White, and Grey versions are still available directly on Golby’s website.

Design

The visual design of the Coastal is incredibly dynamic, anchored by a subtle wave-patterned dial that catches and plays with the light beautifully. This textured backdrop is complemented perfectly by sharp silver hour and minute hands, while a bright yellow seconds hand adds a brilliant flash of contrasting colour. Framing the dial is the absolute star of the show: an eye-catching pink and white bezel. Golby drew the colour inspiration for this range directly from the bright, bold beach huts that line the British shores, but the execution gives off a fantastic retro, almost 1980s Miami Vice energy. It completely transforms when the lights go down, revealing brilliant lume across the white three-quarter section like a neon sign cutting through the dark.

Structurally, the case geometry is cleverly engineered to maximise the watch’s visual presence. While the mid-case technically specs out at 36mm, Golby has paired it with a slightly broader lug-to-lug proportion and a wider 37mm bezel that hangs just past the case edge. This intentional overhang gives the watch a much stronger, more substantial stance than your typical 36mm piece. It’s a design language that looks fantastic, though it naturally leaves you wondering how striking these same lines would look upscaled into a 38mm to 40mm silhouette.

That same design maturity carries over to the hardware. The steel bracelet features excellent finishing and integrates a seamless butterfly clasp that keeps the lines of the links incredibly clean. Golby also ensured the case lines translate perfectly to alternative hardware, as the aesthetic looks equally balanced and intentional when paired with the stark contrast of the black rubber strap.

Performance

Under the hood, the Coastal relies on a premium Miyota 90S5 automatic movement. This high-beat calibre runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, providing a beautifully smooth, crisp sweep of the seconds hand. As a dedicated, true no-date movement, it eliminates the annoying “ghost position” when pulling out the signed crown, delivering rock-solid reliability alongside a dependable 42-hour power reserve.

Golby has backed up this robust engine with a highly competitive hardware package. The watch is shaped from entirely brushed, marine-grade 316L stainless steel for the case to handle daily scuffs, and it is paired with a durable 304L stainless steel 5-link bracelet featuring a seamless butterfly clasp. Protecting the textured dial is a flat sapphire crystal equipped with five layers of inner anti-reflective coating, ensuring reflection-free, crystal-clear legibility from any angle.

When the lights go down, the performance transitions into something truly special. The application of premium Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 is incredibly generous across the custom lighthouse markers, hands, and the sapphire bezel insert. The white three-quarter section of the bezel charges rapidly to emit an intense, long-lasting blue-green glow, transforming the Coastal into a highly functional beacon of low-light legibility.

On The Wrist

Living with the Coastal on a daily basis has been an absolute pleasure. It is a watch that looks just as good as it feels, delivering a genuinely enjoyable wearing experience that constantly catches your eye throughout the day. On the steel bracelet, the watch feels brilliantly balanced—it is well-made and substantial, yet surprisingly light and exceptionally comfortable on the wrist. The 5-link design instantly elevates the aesthetic, lending it a sharper, more formal edge that makes it the perfect companion for the daily grind and the morning commute.

If I had to offer one minor criticism of the hardware’s wearability, it would be the choice of a butterfly clasp. The lack of any toolless micro-adjustment means that some people might struggle to dial in the absolute perfect fit for their wrist. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case for me, as the watch sits perfectly, but it is a factor worth keeping in mind.

When the weekend rolls around, swapping over to the black rubber strap completely transforms the watch’s personality. It shifts the Coastal into a much more relaxed, informal lane—giving it a casual, sporty vibe that is absolutely tailor-made for weekend trips to the beach or packing for your next summer holiday. Having that dual identity right out of the box makes it an incredibly versatile companion for whatever the week throws at you.

The Golby Coastal Anniversary Edition is a masterclass in independent British design. It completely shattered my belief that a 36mm watch would look too small on my wrist. With its standout dial and colour combination, brilliant case geometry, and rock-solid performance specs, it has gone from a watch I never intended to buy to an absolute favourite in my collection.
