Review: Citizen Tsuyosa – A perfect entry-level automatic, or is it over hyped?

Google “affordable automatic watches” and a familiar list of staples will inevitably pop up: the Seiko 5, the Orient Bambino, and the Citizen Tsuyosa.
As an integrated-bracelet sports watch, the Tsuyosa is heavily pitched as a “go-anywhere, do-anything” timekeeper. It comes in a vibrant array of dial colours, positioning it as a piece that can pull double duty as a rugged daily wear or a clean, modern dress watch.
Is it perfect? No, but it is good; it is reliable. It’s a great-looking, affordable automatic watch that wears nicely and keeps time well. It ticks a lot of the right boxes and is a great example of a GADA watch. Tsuyosas can be picked up for well under £200, making it fantastic value for money and a superb addition to any collection.

Summary
The Tsuyosa does almost everything well. It’s well-executed, comfortable, and looks great on the wrist. Is it perfect? No. Is it an absolute masterpiece? Not quite. For me, the tiny push-pull crown is a bit of a nightmare to operate, the printed brand logo feels flat compared to the rest of the dial texturing, and the entirely gold-toned movement viewable out back won’t be to everyone’s taste.
However, it is a watch I genuinely enjoy. The dial variant I chose—the camo green—is brilliant to look at, highly legible, and plays with the light beautifully. The integrated case profile punches well above its weight class, and the bracelet, despite looking like a certified hair-puller, is remarkably smooth.
The verdict? The hype is real. The Tsuyosa is an incredibly solid, affordable gateway into mechanical watches.

Design
The dial is, without a doubt, the centrepiece of this version of the Tsuyosa. Citizen took a bold route with the green camouflage pattern, but the execution elevates it far beyond a lazy graphic print. By combining matte camo shapes with subtle diagonal ribbing, the dial creates a dynamic sense of depth, catching the light beautifully with every tilt of the wrist. Paired with polished baton markers and sharp case lines, it successfully blends a rugged, military aesthetic with a sleek, 1970s sport-chic silhouette.
However, a closer look reveals a couple of design choices that hold it back. Given the immense effort poured into the multi-textured dial, the flat, printed “Citizen” logo feels like a missed opportunity—an applied logo would have provided the premium contrast needed to match the sharp indices.
Around the back, the exhibition window reveals an entirely gold-colored automatic movement. While the contrast is intentional, the bright gold plating feels slightly jarring against the utilitarian, tactical vibe of the front face. A standard silver-toned execution would have felt far more cohesive.
Performance
Under the hood lies the in-house Citizen Caliber 8210 automatic movement. This is a classic, no-frills Japanese workhorse ticking away at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz). In real-world wear, it does exactly what a budget-conscious mechanical caliber is supposed to do: it runs reliably. The 40-to-45-hour power reserve is perfectly adequate for a daily wearer, and modern iterations of this movement thankfully feature a hacking seconds mechanism, allowing you to stop the seconds hand completely for precise time synchronization.
On the wrist, the manual winding action feels reassuringly tactile. However, because the small crown is deeply recessed at the 4 o’clock position to keep the case lines beautifully sleek, it can be incredibly fiddly to pop out and operate if you have larger fingers. In terms of precision, the factory variance sits around -10 to +25 seconds a day. It won’t challenge a Swiss chronometer, but for an everyday sports watch at this price point, it delivers rock-solid, predictable performance.
On The Wrist
On the wrist, the Tsuyosa punches well above its price tag for pure comfort, largely thanks to its smart case geometry. Despite the 40mm case diameter, the actual lug-to-lug distance is a highly wearable 45mm. The lugs slope down sharply, allowing the watch to hug the wrist securely without any awkward overhang. At a svelte 11.7mm thick, it maintains a low profile that easily slides under a shirt cuff.
The integrated three-link steel bracelet is a massive win. The rounded, President-style links are incredibly fluid, draping smoothly over the contours of the wrist without any of the stiff, “hair-pulling” tendencies often found in President-style bracelets. It feels substantial without dragging your arm down.
Wearability isn’t entirely without compromise, though. The stamped folding clasp, while perfectly functional, only features a few points of micro-adjustability and lacks any sort of quick-adjust mechanism. Because an integrated design relies heavily on a precise fit to keep the watch head balanced, finding that absolute “sweet spot” on a hot day can take a little patience. That aside, once sized correctly, it distributes its weight beautifully and offers a premium on-the-wrist experience that easily outclasses many of its direct competitors.
